Use when telling who you are or what something is

Attach 은/는 to introduce a topic: 'As for me, I am…', 'As for this, it is…'. Use 은 after a consonant, 는 after a vowel.

Rules

Noun (with batchim) + 은
학생 (생 ends in batchim ㅇ) → 학생 + 은 → 학생은
Noun (no batchim) + 는
저 (no batchim) → 저 + 는 → 저는

저는 학생이에요.
I am a student.
이름은 지호예요.
My name is Jiho.
수진 씨는 회사원이에요.
Sujin is an office worker.

Use when pointing out what something is

Use 이/가 when stating what something is. Use 이 after a consonant, 가 after a vowel.

Rules

Noun (with batchim) + 이
이름 (름 ends in batchim ㅁ) → 이름 + 이 → 이름이
Noun (no batchim) + 가
친구 (no batchim) → 친구 + 가 → 친구가

Examples

이름이 뭐예요?

여기가 학교예요.

Saying 'is / am / are'이에요/예요 — ~입니다 (= is / am / are)

Use when saying what something is.

이에요/예요 is the polite-informal form of 'to be'. Use 이에요 after a consonant, 예요 after a vowel.
