-는 바람에 and -다가는 — Unexpected Causes and Warnings in Korean

Two TOPIK II patterns for bad outcomes: -는 바람에 for an unexpected cause, -다가는 for a warning. Examples and a free quiz.

Use when an unexpected event caused a negative result.

Use when an unexpected event causes a negative or unintended result. The outcome must always be negative or unintended.

Rules

Verb stem (with batchim) + 는 바람에
닫다 (닫 = batchim ㄷ) → 닫 + 는 바람에 → 닫는 바람에
Verb stem (no batchim) + 는 바람에
오다 (오 = no batchim) → 오 + 는 바람에 → 오는 바람에
Verb stem (ㄹ batchim, drops ㄹ) + 는 바람에
울다 (울 = ㄹ batchim) → 우 + 는 바람에 → 우는 바람에

Examples

휴대폰이 울리는 바람에 집중을 못 했어요.
I couldn't concentrate because my phone rang.
갑자기 손님이 오는 바람에 약속을 못 지켰어요.
I couldn't keep my promise because guests suddenly came.
노트북이 갑자기 꺼지는 바람에 자료를 다 잃었어요.
I lost all my work because my laptop suddenly turned off.
옆자리 동료가 떠드는 바람에 회의 내용을 놓쳤어요.
I missed the meeting content because the colleague next to me was chatting.

If You Keep Doing (Warning)-다가는 — 계속하면 (경고)

Use when warning about consequences of continuing.

Use to warn that if a current action continues, something bad will happen. Nuance: 'if you keep this up, you'll be in trouble.'

Rules

Verb stem (with batchim) + 다가는
먹다 (먹 = batchim ㄱ) → 먹 + 다가는 → 먹다가는
Verb stem (no batchim) + 다가는
무리하다 (하 = no batchim) → 무리하 + 다가는 → 무리하다가는
Verb stem (ㄹ batchim, keep ㄹ) + 다가는
놀다 (놀 = ㄹ batchim) → 놀 + 다가는 → 놀다가는

Examples

이 속도로 일하다가는 번아웃이 올 거예요.
If you keep working at this pace, you'll burn out.
그렇게 충동적으로 결정하다가는 후회할 거예요.
If you keep making impulsive decisions, you'll regret it.
준비도 없이 시작하다가는 낭패를 볼 거예요.
If you start without preparation, you'll be in a mess.
이렇게 매일 야근하다가는 건강을 잃을 거예요.
If you keep working overtime every day like this, you'll lose your health.
