-건대 — formal premise / judgment-건대 — 격식 판단 근거

Use this to formally signal that the speaker's judgment, inference, or opinion is about to follow. Forms like '생각하건대' (as I think), '보건대' (as I see), or '미루어 보건대' (judging from) are typical. It pairs only with a limited set of cognitive verbs (생각하다, 보다, 헤아리다, 추론하다, 판단하다). Common in editorials, presentations, and official documents; in casual speech, '-아/어 보니' is more natural. Examples: 제가 보건대 상황이 심각합니다 / 거듭 생각하건대 이 사안은 신중히 다뤄야 합니다.

As in '생각하건대 이 방법이 최선이다', this presents the speaker's subjective judgment in a formal way. It only combines with limited verbs (생각하다, 보다, 미루어 보다).

Rules

Cognitive verb stem + 건대
보다 (보 = stem) → 보 + 건대 → 보건대
~(으)로 미루어 + 보건대 (presenting grounds)
자료에 비추어 보다 → 자료에 비추어 보 + 건대 → 자료에 비추어 보건대
솔직히/거듭 + verb + 건대 (emphasizing stance)
솔직히 말하다 → 솔직히 말하 + 건대 → 솔직히 말하건대

Examples

제가 보건대 상황이 심각해요.
As I see it, the situation is serious.
솔직히 말하건대 개선이 필요해요.
Frankly speaking, improvement is needed.
경험상 판단하건대 가능성이 있어요.
Judging from experience, there is a possibility.
여러 자료에 비추어 보건대 결론은 명백합니다.

거듭 생각하건대 이 사안은 신중히 다뤄야 합니다.

-는가 하면 — surprising contrast / coexistence-는가 하면 — 의외 대조·병존

Use this to first present one case and then point out that another case also exists, contrasting diverse aspects or surprising twists. While '-는 반면' directly contrasts the traits of two subjects, '-는가 하면' focuses on the coexistence of 'this kind of case AND that kind of case'. Verbs use '-는가 하면', adjectives and 이다 use '-(으)ㄴ가 하면'. Examples: 전통을 중시하는 사람이 있는가 하면 새로운 가치를 추구하는 사람도 있어요 / 수출이 호조를 보이는가 하면 내수는 좀처럼 살아나지 않습니다.

As in '웃는가 하면 울기도 한다' (sometimes laughs, sometimes cries), this contrasts two coexisting moods, or as in '성공하는 사람이 있는가 하면 실패하는 사람도 있다' (some succeed, others fail), it contrasts varied aspects.

Rules

Verb stem + 는가 하면 (present contrast)
있다 (있 = stem) → 있 + 는가 하면 → 있는가 하면
Adjective / 이다 + -(으)ㄴ가 하면 (state contrast)
덥다 (ㅂ irregular) → 더우 + ㄴ가 하면 → 더운가 하면
Verb past + 았/었는가 하면 (past contrast)
성공하다 → 성공했 + 는가 하면 → 성공했는가 하면

Examples

전통을 중시하는 사람이 있는가 하면 새로운 것을 추구하는 사람도 있어요.
Some people value tradition, while others pursue what is new.
찬성하는 사람이 있는가 하면 반대하는 사람도 있어요.
Some agree, while others disagree.

Some days are hot, while other days are cold.
