-게끔, -(으)ㄹ 바에야, -는 이상 — Advanced TOPIK Grammar

Three advanced Korean patterns for purpose, preference under dissatisfaction, and binding conditions. Examples and a free quiz.

-게끔 — Result induction (purpose)-게끔 — 목적·결과 유도

Use when you intentionally lead toward, or set up an environment for, some result state. Similar to '-도록' but with stronger focus on the result and a more written/formal feel. The negative form '-지 않게끔' is also common. e.g., 학생들이 이해하게끔 쉽게 설명했어요 (I explained simply so the students would understand) / 오해가 생기지 않게끔 명확하게 정리했어요 (I organized it clearly so no misunderstanding would arise).

'-게끔' is similar in meaning to '-도록', but carries a stronger nuance of intentionally leading the result state to be realized. It often appears in the structure '~하게끔 만들다/하다'. In speech, '-도록' is more general-purpose.

Rules

Verb stem + 게끔
이해하다 (이해하 = stem) → 이해하 + 게끔 → 이해하게끔
-게끔 + 하다/만들다 (induction structure)
편하다 (편하 = stem) → 편하 + 게끔 + 만들다 → 편하게끔 만들었어요
-지 않게끔 (negative induction)
잊다 (잊 = stem) → 잊 + 지 않게끔 → 잊지 않게끔

Examples

학생들이 이해하게끔 쉽게 설명했어요.
I explained it simply so the students would understand.
모두가 참여하게끔 분위기를 만들었어요.
I created an atmosphere so that everyone would participate.
오해가 없게끔 명확하게 정리했어요.
I organized it clearly so no misunderstanding would arise.
외국인 손님도 길을 잃지 않게끔 안내판을 한국어와 영어로 함께 표기했습니다.
We labeled the signs in both Korean and English so foreign visitors wouldn't get lost.
다음 세대가 이 문화를 자연스럽게 접할 수 있게끔 교육 과정에 반영해야 합니다.
We have to reflect this in the curriculum so the next generation can encounter this culture naturally.

-(으)ㄹ 바에야 — Rather (alternative under dissatisfaction)-(으)ㄹ 바에야 — 차라리 (불만족 대비)

Use when the prior situation is unsatisfactory and you propose or resign yourself to 'rather a different choice.' What follows is always a better alternative, often paired with '차라리' or '이왕이면.' There are two forms: future-hypothetical (-(으)ㄹ 바에야) and past/perfective (-ㄴ 바에야). e.g., 대충 할 바에야 안 하는 게 좋아요 (Rather than doing it sloppily, better not to do it) / 이왕 시작한 바에야 끝까지 해 봅시다 (Now that we've started, let's see it through).

The core is dissatisfaction with the prior situation. A better alternative always follows. Often paired with '차라리' or '이왕이면', and carries an emotion of resolve, encouragement, or resignation.

Rules

Verb (with batchim) + 을 바에야
먹다 (먹 has batchim ㄱ) → 먹 + 을 바에야 → 먹을 바에야
Verb (no batchim) + ㄹ 바에야 (future/hypothetical)
하다 (하 = no batchim) → 하 + ㄹ 바에야 → 할 바에야
-(으)ㄴ 바에야 (past / perfective)
시작하다 (시작하 = no batchim) → 시작하 + ㄴ 바에야 → 시작한 바에야

Examples

이렇게 할 바에야 차라리 다시 시작하는 게 나아요.
Rather than doing it like this, it's better to start over.
늦을 바에야 안 가는 게 낫겠어요.
Rather than being late, I might as well not go.
대충 할 바에야 하지 않는 게 좋아요.
Rather than doing it sloppily, it's better not to do it.
마음에도 없는 말로 사과할 바에야 차라리 침묵하는 편이 낫습니다.
Rather than apologizing with words you don't mean, it's better to stay silent.
전셋값 부담을 안고 무리해서 살 바에야 좀 더 작은 집으로 옮기는 게 현명합니다.
Rather than overstretching to bear jeonse costs, it's wiser to move to a smaller place.

-는 이상 — Conditional persistence (obligation)-는 이상 — 조건 지속 (당위)

Use to strongly express that as long as a condition holds, the following result/responsibility necessarily follows. Stronger nuance of obligation, responsibility, or determination than '-는 한,' and mostly used in formal contexts. Comes in three forms: present (-는), past (-(으)ㄴ), and noun/state (-인). e.g., 약속한 이상 반드시 지켜야 해요 (Since I've promised, I must keep it) / 학생인 이상 공부는 해야죠 (As long as one is a student, one has to study).

The core is strong obligation tied to a condition. The condition has been established, so the responsibility or consequence cannot be avoided. Often used in formal contexts.

Rules

Verb stem + 는 이상 (present)
참여하다 (참여하 = stem) → 참여하 + 는 이상 → 참여하는 이상
Verb + -(으)ㄴ 이상 (past / perfective)
약속하다 (약속하 = no batchim) → 약속하 + ㄴ 이상 → 약속한 이상
Noun/state + 인 이상
사실 (noun) → 사실 + 인 이상 → 사실인 이상

Examples

약속한 이상 반드시 지켜야 해요.
Since I've promised, I must keep it.
시작한 이상 끝까지 해야 해요.
Since I've started, I have to see it through to the end.
결정한 이상 후회하지 마세요.
Since you've decided, don't regret it.
팀의 책임자인 이상 이번 결과에 대해 끝까지 책임을 져야 합니다.
As the team's leader, you must take full responsibility for this outcome.
공식적으로 발표한 이상 이제 와서 입장을 바꾸기는 어려울 것입니다.
Since the announcement has been made publicly, it will be hard to change your stance now.

윤아
제임스 씨, 다음 주 축제 부스 콘셉트 정해야 돼요.
James, we need to lock down the festival booth concept next week.
제임스
그러게요. 다 같이 즐길 수 있게끔 포토존도 넣으면 어때요?
Right. How about adding a photo zone so everyone can enjoy it?
윤아
좋아요. 근데 지난번처럼 대충 준비할 바에야 아예 안 하는 게 낫잖아요.
Good. But if we prep sloppily like last time, better not to do it at all.
제임스
그렇죠. 저희가 책임자인 이상 끝까지 퀄리티는 챙겨야죠.
Exactly. As long as we're in charge, we have to maintain quality to the end.
윤아
맞아요. 관객 입장에서 한눈에 보이게끔 안내판도 크게 만들어요.
Right. Let's make the signage big so visitors can take it in at a glance.
제임스
인쇄를 맡길 바에야 직접 디자인해서 붙이는 게 더 나을 것 같아요.
Rather than outsourcing the print, designing and posting it ourselves would be better.
윤아
오, 좋은 생각이네요. 운영진으로 들어온 이상 이 정도는 기꺼이 해야죠.
Oh, good idea. As long as we're on the org team, we should gladly go this far.
제임스
저 오늘 밤 시안 초안 만들어 볼게요.
I'll draft a mock-up tonight.

(blank) ___ slowly so that everyone could understand.
게끔 — The context is intentionally inducing the result state of '이해하다 (understanding)' to be realized, so '-게끔' fits naturally. It's similar to '-도록' but with stronger focus on the result state.
Now that we've started ___ , let's see it through to the end.
바에야 — '이왕 ~한 바에야' expresses determination or proposal — given that things have come this far, let's choose another path instead. It fits well in semi-formal exhortations.
Since I've promised ___ , I must keep it.
이상 — Since the act of '약속하다 (promising)' has already happened, the resulting responsibility/obligation follows. '약속한 이상' pairs well with emphasis words like '반드시' or '당연히'.
